Goodness is consistent throughout the creation account in Genesis 1 and 2. After each day the Lord makes a pronouncement on the creation that he has made. We read that “God saw that it was good.” However, there remained one thing that the Lord God saw that was not good and that was that the man should be alone. God in his grace and kindness did not leave man alone. He made a helper fit for him. This is such a profound example of God’s gracious and loving provision. He provided for Adam on such a deep level.

For those who are single you are often reminded of your loneliness. Even those who are married can remember days of loneliness. Loneliness hurts. There are those who are called to a life of celibacy and singleness. They tend to be content in their singleness and it is in a sense ok for them to be alone. However, for many other single people they can still feel the sting of loneliness. If you are single and have a desire to be married than you are probably not called to singleness. It is right to desire a spouse. Just because you do not have one right now does not mean that you are called to singleness.

The biblical model is that the man should pursue the woman. So in a sense there are roles to play even in dating.  As a woman you are called to be pursued and to wait. You can do this actively in prayer. Ask those who are close to you to pray for you. As you wait keep your heart close to the Lord, trusting in him to provide. As a man you are called to pursue your future wife. Do not pursue the woman who is only attractive to your eyes, but find a wife who is beautiful because of her walk with the Lord. As a church body we can help fellow men and women that are single. We can support woman as they wait and we can encourage men to pursue the women who are patiently waiting. Marriage is a beautiful thing, let us pray for those who desire to be married. Pray that God would answer their prayers and that he would continue to build His church in this way.

Confession of Sin

Leader: Holy Father and Maker of all, at the pinnacle of your creative power you made a man after your image, calling him “very good.” From his own body you fashioned for him a woman who would complete that which he was not. In so doing, you established the highest standard for human relationships, the marriage covenant between one man and one woman for life.

People: But we have rebelled against this perfect image in so many ways, preferring the wisdom of the world to the wisdom of God. You have made us to rejoice in the wife of our youth, but we have scattered our streams abroad. Have mercy, O Lord.

Leader: Jesus explains the purpose of the law when he tells us that if we look with lustful intent upon a woman, we have committed adultery in our hearts.

People: But we have bought the lie that our hearts could be filled with wickedness and our hands remain clean. With our whole hearts may we seek you! Let us not wander from your commandments!
