As Christians we all want to be men and women who are considered godly. More than that we want to be men and women who truly are godly. It is one thing to be perceived in a good light among those at church or those at work. It is something entirely different to possess a godly character. Our character will often come out when we are under some of our toughest trials. We see in the passage this week that David’s character comes out in the midst of his trial of being pursued by Saul.

I recently read the book Unbroken by Lauren Hillenbrand. At one point the main character, Louis Zamperini, and the crew from his plane are shot down and land in the middle of the Pacific ocean. He finds himself on a raft with two other men. He knows one of them well. They have just a little bit of water and food to help them survive. The man whom Louis does not know as well in a moment of panic scarfs down the remaining food. This moment of suffering and panic revealed this man’s character.

It will be the same for us in life. When we go through suffering our true character will shine through. It is in that suffering where God will begin to form us into the people he wants us to be if we allow him. He uses the suffering for our good. All we have to do is submit to him in our suffering and seek him out so that we may cling to him. A godly man or woman is someone whose character is shaped and molded by Christ in their lives and it is evident to everyone around them. As we approach Sunday turn to Christ anew in reliance and hope that he will make you more like him.
