Why do we turn to idols? On paper it seems like it would be easy to resist idols in our life and remain faithful to Jesus. However, we know that it is a constant struggle to die to our idols such as comfort, control or influence. I believe that part of the reason is that we were made to worship therefore we will always be worshipping something. But I believe that it is also even more foundational than that. We also have idols in our life because we believe that they will give us life. We can trace this all the way back to the Garden of Eden. Adam and Eve believed the lie of Satan in that if they were to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil they would truly find life and be like God. Yet, they found that instead of giving them life it proved to be lethal. Idols work the same way in our lives today. When we turn to them we always believe the lie that they will truly give us life, but instead we find out that they will ultimately kill us.

We need to be reminded of this, that idolatry leads to death while repentance and faith lead to life. It can be difficult even though we know it to be true because of how much idols ‘feel’ like life-givers. We can reason with ourself that if we could only control this situation then I would be ok. Or we can think that if only I spent more time relaxing and resting than life would be fine. Our idols can take the form of many good things like success, reputation or influence, but Jesus calls us to forsake our idols because he loves us and knows that they will only lead to death. Therefore as we consider these things this weekend think about the ways in which you need to repent and turn to Christ as the true love of your heart.
