As many of you know Meghan and I had a baby boy just over a week ago and we have named him Knox. We have already realized how much time and effort goes in to parenting, so when I was thinking about writing this blog post it was hard to write any illustration without thinking of one that involved our son. When thinking about faith and foolishness the thing that struck me was 1 Corinthians 1:27 which says “God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise.” Over this past week Knox has shown great dependance upon his parents in asking us to do everything for him. We change his diapers when he goes to the bathroom, we feed him when he is hungry and we move him when he needs to be moved. There is not a clearer picture to us in our lives of weakness, frailty and dependence.

God has displayed his wisdom in what the world considers foolish. Our Lord was born into the world in this frail state of being a baby born in a manger. Salvation came through this child who would die for the sins of his people. His own people at that time did not see that as the way that God would deliver them. They wanted someone to come who would be a mighty warrior that would conquer the world’s strength. Even though God did conquer the world’s strength it was done through what the world saw as weak.

In His Word God has called us to place our faith in Christ who was born as a human child. This human child was born in a lowly manger and was being hunted down to be killed by the Jewish leader of the day. It would most definitely seem foolish for God’s people to place their faith in this baby, but that is exactly what He has called us to do. It is through this faith that God shames the wisdom of the world. In God’s eternal wisdom He has used the weak things of the world to shame the strong and the foolishness of the world to shame the wise. This is the wonderful and awesome God that we worship. Prepare your hearts this weekend to worship God being reminded of His amazing wisdom, power and glory.
