We live in a world now where we can hear of cataclysmic world events within seconds. We have just recently heard of the massive earthquake in Nepal. We have seen video of ISIS terrorism. We can even read about detailed events in the death of Freddie Gray in Baltimore. Yet with all of this information we find ourselves stuck in a peculiar position. Never in world history have people had such access to information like this and with relatively limited power to do anything about these tragic events.

This weekend we will hear about the persecution of the people of God. How are we to respond? What can we do? We can often first think of how we can act. Even though this is a commendable thought I think it reveals our belief about God’s power. I would argue that one of the first things we should think to do is to pray. When prayer is at the top of our list of ‘actions’ to take it shows that we have a deep seated belief in the power of prayer.

I have heard that many believe that it was the prayers of the people of God that began to overthrow communism in the later parts of the 20th century. During that time when people prayed they believed that God would listen and they had faith that he could do anything. As we reflect on the church around the world as they are being persecuted in horrendous ways, let us pray. Let us turn to God on behalf of our brothers and sisters pleading for them before a God who is all-powerful and faithful to his people.
