Last week, we began a new sermon series on the book of 2nd Peter titled, “Truth Be Told: The Importance of Sound Teaching Revealed in Second Peter.” In the first sermon of the series, we learned that we are able to know God and that this knowledge changes us.  In this week’s sermon, we will see what that change looks like within our lives – growth in holiness.

The Apostle Peter wrote this second letter as a polemic against the false teaching that faced the early Christian church. Before launching into a scathing description of false teachers in the second chapter of the letter, Peter briefly writes of the true Christian’s life as a diligent pursuit of holiness.  The description he provides of the Christian life stands in stark contrast to his portrayal of the false teachers.  The Christian, Peter writes, is to pursue virtue, knowledge, self-control, steadfastness, godliness, brotherly-affection, and love. The false teachers, however, are described as greedy, driven by sensuality, blasphemous, and destructive.

With the advent of the Internet, the world gained unprecedented access to information and numerous conflicting voices claiming to speak for Christianity gained a global platform.  As followers of Christ during the Age of Information, Peter’ s second letter continues to ring true in its exhortation to “be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and election.”  This week’s text gives us a rubric for growth in holiness, a motivation for growth, and a profound encouragement that “His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence…”
