This week we are going to be baptizing two infants. Obviously infant baptism or paedobaptism is a controversial issue in the church and has been an issue since the reformation. One way that we as Presbyterians understand the sacrament of baptism is that it serves as a sign and seal of God’s promises upon the child. And we find this sacrament in the context of the covenants. Therefore baptism does not mean that a child is saved because they are baptized, rather they are ‘signed and sealed’ into the covenant community, the Church. The way that a believer takes part of these promises that are extended through the covenant is through the instrument of faith.

You may be wondering why I am talking about baptism, covenants and seals. The reason that I bring this up is that this language of being sealed is used our passage this Sunday and it is language that is used throughout all of Scripture. Therefore it describes how God relates to his people. As Christians we are ones who have laid ahold of Christ by faith. Therefore we have access to all the benefits of the covenant. Just as a ring in marriage serves as a sign and seal to show us that a person belongs to another so do we as Christians belong to Christ. We do not look to baptism for salvation, rather we can look to it as it represents the foundation of our salvation which is Christ himself. As you approach Sunday this week think on this reality that you are set apart and sealed as God’s chosen people and even consider what this assurance may mean as we are called to extend his kingdom throughout the whole world.
