There are a few Christian hymns we know and love with mysterious origins. How Firm A Foundation appeared in a hymnal over 200 years ago, simply attributed to “K.” There are theories of who this illusive K is, but certain knowledge of who this is has been lost with history. It is almost fitting though that of all hymns, this hymn lost its author. It points us to the wonderful promises of God contained in His Word.

The first verse begins, “How firm a foundation, you saints of the Lord, is laid for your faith in his excellent Word! What more can he say than to you he has said, to you who for refuge to Jesus have fled?” The firm foundation of our faith is laid on the solid rock of the promises of God. He spells out these promises in His excellent Word! This verse sets our trajectory for the rest of the song. It makes us ask the question, “What are these promises?” Well, this song is glad you asked because it explains.

Verses two through four all elaborate on the promises of God. God urges us to not fear our circumstances because His righteous omniscient hand is with us. God sometimes calls us to go through troubles and hardships, but He will bless our struggles and sanctify our distresses. He will consume our dross (an old word for rubbish), and refine our gold. What a comfort to those who are hurting and troubled, to know that God promises to be with you, drawing you closer to Himself.

How Firm A Foundation finally crescendos with verse five, “The soul that on Jesus has leaned for repose, I will not, I will not desert to his foes; that soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake, I’ll never, no never, no never forsake.” Lean on the promises of God contained in His Word. The soul that leans upon Jesus will never ever ever be forsaken. As we gather for worship we will read God’s Word, pray God’s Word, hear the preaching of God’s Word, and sing God’s Word. May we be exposed to the promises and power of God’s Word so that we can trust and delight in God’s Word.
