When I was a kid my parents liked to say that I had “selective hearing.” Basically, if they told me something that I wanted to hear, I heard them just fine, but if they told me to do something that I didn’t want to do and I didn’t do it, my go-to response was, “I didn’t hear you.” In calling my disobedience “selective hearing,” my parents weren’t saying that what needed to be improved was my hearing. What they were saying is that hearing implies obedience. If I really heard what they were saying, my hearing should be followed by obedience.
Do you have “selective hearing” when it comes to God’s word? Unless we hear what God says through Scripture and put it into practice, we are not really listening to what He says. If we only pick out the parts that we like (such as the promises of blessing) and ignore the parts we don’t like (commands, warnings, etc.), then we are using “selective hearing” with God’s word. “ALL Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness.” (2 Timothy 3:16) God gives us the Bible as a source of life for us. He wants us to know how we should live and how we can please Him. So hear and obey what God says in His word.
