This week Uptown joins a prisoner in Rome writing to a church plant in modern Turkey about the power of the Gospel. It is easy to think of Paul as some sort of church planting wizard who never struggled, never doubted, never got discouraged in ministry, and was 100% effective in his efforts. Paul was one of the most influential Christians to ever live, but by no means was he perfect. What distinguished Paul as a prolific minister is the same thing that sets great churches, godly Christians, and effective ministries apart today – commitment to the Gospel.

Paul writes from prison to a church plant in a small city. He speaks with an abundance of familiarity, but Paul was not Colossae’s church planter. Paul is just responding to the report of Epaphras. Not much is known about Epaphras, but he was a prayer warrior and a faithful minister of the gospel (Colossians 1:7; 4:12). Epaphras came to tell Paul what was going on in the Colossae and Paul couldn’t stop thanking God for their overwhelming response to the Gospel. It encouraged prisoner Paul to be reminded that the Gospel is God’s power unto salvation, that every aspect of human existence has been changed because of Christ. Paul may be in chains, but he has the Gospel, and that is enough. Paul begins the letter to the Colossians by saying “all you need is the gospel” and we will see him flesh out all that this entails. Colossae was being renewed, hearts were being transformed, and God was at work through the power of the Gospel.

Do Christians still believe in the sufficiency of the Gospel? Does it affect every aspect of our lives? Are we thankful for God’s work in the world the way Paul is? Do we see Christ as above all else? Abraham Kuyper said, “There is not a square inch in the whole domain of our human existence over which Christ, who is Sovereign over all, does not cry, Mine!” Join us as we study together Paul’s Letter to the Colossians and discover Christ’s Supremacy Over All of Life.
