During college, I had the opportunity to study abroad in London. My favorite thing about being in London was seeing the architecture. The old, beautiful buildings that are all but absent in America almost feel commonplace in Europe. Although there were many beautiful castles and cathedrals, the one that set itself apart in my mind was St. Paul’s Cathedral. The long nave leading to the soaring dome was breathtaking. The whole experience was awe-inspiring.
No one has to tell us to feel amazed. When we see great, beautiful things, we naturally feel a sense of awe and respect. While feeling this sense of awe is natural, directing it in the right direction and toward its proper object is not always so natural. Nothing and no one deserves our awe, respect, and worship more than Jesus, and yet we often do not give him the full worship that He deserves. He is the God of the universe, who took on human flesh in order to save us. Every beautiful building and every beautiful work of art exist because of Him. The very concept of beauty itself exists because He is beautiful. All talent, joy, and wisdom exist because of Him. All of the people that we admire, all the sports that we enjoy, and all of the art that we find beautiful derive their worth from Jesus. He should never cease to amaze us; His greatness should never cease to drive us to our knees in awe and worship. Let us gather for worship this Sunday with an awareness that Jesus deserves all of our worship, respect, and obedience.
