During the eight months or so that my wife and I were engaged we lived in two different cities. I lived in Chattanooga, TN while she was four hours away in Greenville, SC. I have never longed for something more than I did in that eight month period when we were separated from each other. All my hopes were tied to our wedding day. Our wedding day was not only the day when we would become husband and wife, but it was also the day when our time apart would come to an end. As our wedding day grew nearer, I could hardly think of anything else. I was consumed with thoughts about my wife and our wedding day.

As we wait for Christ’s return we should wait with similar longing. Revelation compares Christ’s return to a wedding feast in which Christ plays the part of the groom and we, the church, are his bride. As we look forward to Christ’s return, what we are really looking forward to is our wedding day, when we will be with our beloved. We don’t know when this day will be, but we do know that it is coming, and soon. So we should long for it eagerly.

As we long for Christ’s return we should remember that we are not the only ones waiting for this day. As our groom, Christ also longs for the day when we will be fully and finally united with Him. Think about the way that a groom feels towards his bride in the days leading up to their wedding. The absolute love and acceptance, the inability to think about anything else, the willingness to do anything for his bride: this is how Christ feels about His church. Is there any more encouraging thought than this: the God of the universe longs for us as a groom longs for his bride? This should cause us to long for Christ’s return every more passionately, because on that day we will be united with the only one who loves us fully.
