I think that it’s a universal rule that the better food tastes the worse it is for you. On one side of the food spectrum there is cake, ice cream, pizza, and anything fried; on the other side, there’s spinach, kale, carrots, and brussel sprouts. The first foods taste really good. They provide instant satisfaction and enjoyment, but if you eat too much of them, they will slowly destroy your body.

Throughout Scripture, the sinful pleasures of this world are compared to a prostitute. Prostitutes are alluring. They promise a quick fix with instant satisfaction. This is exactly what the world around us promises. Sin is alluring. There is no doubt about that. From tearing down a co-worker to make ourselves look good or yelling at other drivers on the freeway, to the more addictive sins of pornography or alcoholism, sin always comes with a degree of instant satisfaction. Most sins feel good in the moment, but Scripture teaches us that in the end these things will inevitably destroy us. All sin will be punished, if not in this life, then at the final judgment. Therefore, we are called to abandon the way of sin and follow Christ. Only following Christ and obeying God’s law brings us ultimate satisfaction. While following the allurements of the world is compared to a prostitute, our union with Christ is compared to a marriage. Only as we live in Him and follow His commandments can we experience the pure love for which we all long. And thanks be to God that our marriage to Christ does not depend on our own perfection, because for those who belong to Him, Christ has borne the destructive consequences of sin. As we pursue the holiness that God requires, we can rejoice knowing that Jesus has done everything necessary to make us His bride and to rescue us from the false allurements of sin.
