Trust and obey,
For there is no other way
To be happy in Jesus,
Than to trust and obey.

Seems simple enough. There are not any big mysteries revealed in the words of this classic hymn. But they can be really discouraging if taken as simple commands. If you have ever been upset with God, you know how unhelpful it is when a friend says, “Have you tried trusting and obeying God more?” “Of course I have! Right now it feels like He’s the problem.” In our fallen state, trusting God and obeying Him can be really hard. Especially in times of trial, the easiest solution seems to be taking matters into our own hands and not trusting God at all. It is a very popular idea to say, “I will control my own destiny and make the most of this situation.” We do not always blatantly disobey God in trials, but there is an underlying assumption that God is only in charge if He does what I want Him to do.

What is the solution? If it is so hard to trust and obey God, how do we even start trying? Remember all the reasons God is worthy of our trust. Look back to all the times He has delivered you in the past. Remember how in hind sight you were able to see Him at work through your previous trials. Even if we have been burned by others, our God promises to never leave us nor foresake us (Deuteronomy 31:6). Know that you are securely in God’s hands (John 10:27-30) and that He cares for you (1 Peter 5:7). Look to Jesus, who trusted the Father in the trial of the cross so that we would become sons of God and able to trust Him too. Encourage others not simply to trust and obey God, but to remember that we worship a God who is trustworthy and compassionate to those who put their trust in Him.
