“I believe; help my unbelief!” This cry from the father of a boy with an unclean spirit in Mark 9 seems perplexing. It sounds like if you were to get pulled over by a police officer and tell them, “Officer, I was not speeding. But go easy on me in my speeding ticket!” Isn’t he contradicting himself? This father is pleading for Jesus to heal his son who has been plagued since birth. He says, “If you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.” We see right off the bat how ridiculous of a request this is. If Jesus can do anything? Of course Jesus can do anything! He is God, so of course he can help! Jesus responds by saying, “All things are possible for one who believes.” The father asks for help, confessing just how little faith he has; and Jesus answers, not according to the merit of the father’s faith, but according to the riches of Jesus’ grace.

We are often in the same dilemma of the father. When faced with trials, we confess that we are trusting the Lord but at the same time have doubts and weakness in our faith. How we respond to trials reveals the depths of our faith or lack thereof. We claim to be walking by faith and not by sight, but often are distracted by the things we see along the way. There is an internal battle between belief and unbelief within our souls. But praise God that we are justified by faith, and that faith is a gift of divine grace! We can have the same cry of the father, “I believe; help my unbelief!” And Jesus hears our prayers and answers them. We do not need to fear losing the faith we’ve been given, but we can take bold steps towards living more by faith and less by sight.
