It’s almost graduation season! A big shout out and congratulations to all of Uptown’s Seniors who will be finishing up with their studies and onto the next chapter of life! Keep pushing, you’re almost there. It is an exciting and confusing time. Both parents and students will have huge sighs of relief thinking, “Thank goodness, we made it!” It is always funny how emotional everyone becomes. There are feelings of pride and relief, there’s laughter and tears, there’s endings that have been a long time coming and brand new beginnings. Parents have been spending the last 18 years trying to turn a dependent baby into a functioning and mature Christian to send into society. Children have been trying to prove that they’re ready to go out and conquer the world. It is at these big occasions when parents’ eyes are opened that their child has matured and grown up. They will always be your little baby, but the relationship grows into something new and special.

There are no big graduation moments of our Christian walks, but it would be cool if there were. Unfortunately, this can turn into us never maturing as Christians. In our passage of Hebrews this week, the author rebukes the church for still being spiritual babies. God is trying to grow us and shape us and make us spiritually mature, but we often dig our feet into the ground to resist it. Spiritual growth often has growing pains, but the reward is sweet. A parent-child relationship looks different when the child is 13 and when the child is 30. Likewise, our conversations with the Lord should be more deep and mature than they were a few years ago. Can you look back on your relationship with God and see growth that God has done in you? Is there spiritual fruit in your own life? If you are an adopted child of God, He will always love you as His little boy or little girl, but He also delights in watching you grow closer and closer to Him.
