I am still keeping secrets I learned in elementary school. Not because I want to, or because I have any good secrets, but because I made the biggest promise an 8 year old can make… A pinky promise. At that age, no kids have been able to merit a reputation as a good secret keeper, nor do they have any money or other assets to guarantee their promise, so they resort to all that they have, their pinky fingers. The tradition dates back to the seventeenth century in the Japanese custom of “yubiriki” literally meaning “finger cutting.” If someone made this pinky swear and broke it, they would obligated to lose that pinky. An even more dramatic promise would be the classic, “cross my heart, hope to die, stick a needle in my eye.” This phrase came from a Christian tradition of swearing upon the cross that one would rather die a painful death than break their promise (it’s not a good Christian tradition, but that’s where the phrase started).

Throughout the Bible, we see that God makes plenty of promises to His people. But God did not have to swear upon His pinky or on His heart, but He swore on Himself. God is the one making the promise, God is the one guaranteeing the promise, God is the one fulfilling the promise, God Himself is the promise. Jesus did not lose a pinky, or have needles in his eyes for breaking a promise. Instead He took nails in the hands, a spear in the side, a crown of thorns, and a death on the cross in order to keep His promise His people. Those are the lengths the Son of God Himself took in order to fulfill His promise to us, so we can put 100% of our trust in His promises.
