There’s something special about coming back home after a trip. Whether it was for vacation or work, whether it was enjoyable or a headache, it’s always a special feeling when you see the Charlotte skyline and you know that you’re almost home. There’s even something about returning to a place that makes it feel like home, almost as if a place isn’t home until you come back to it for the first time. Including college, I have lived in three different cities since leaving home for college, and in each city, it was when I came back after leaving for the first time that it started to feel like home. Returning is a regular and consistent part of life.

Returning is also a regular part of the Christian life. However, in our walk with God, returning is necessary for a much sadder and more sinful reason than returning from a vacation. Like the prodigal son, we flee from our heavenly father in order to live how we want. Our lives are marked by sin and rebellion against the God who loves us. This means that the Christian life is a life of repentance. We are constantly sinning and wandering, and God is constantly calling us back to repentance.

So as we come to worship this week, we do so as God’s people who are once again returning to Him. One of my seminary professors said in class once, “On this side of heaven, a call to worship is always a call to repentance.” But this does not mean that every time you come to church you are also repenting. Repentance is an act of the heart in which we confess our sin and turn back to God. So this week, as you physically return to God’s church, turn your heart to God as well. Acknowledge your sin, and know that the God of grace is calling you back to Himself.
