God gives us many reasons to follow Him. Sometimes He appeals to the past; sometimes He points us forward to the future. Regarding the past, God reminds us of the ways that He has shown us grace, the ways He has disciplined us, and the ways He has brought us through the darkness of suffering. In terms of the future, God promises to bless obedience and punish disobedience. In other words, God treats us like His children. While children should obey their parents simply based on their parents’ authority over them, they also have many reasons for doing so. When they look to the past, they remember the ways that their parents have loved them and cared for them. When they look to the future, children can (theoretically) see the threat of punishment for disobedience and the promise of reward for obedience.

And in both instances, the ultimate goal is to address the heart, not simply behavior. God wants to show us that idolatry is always futile. We were made to serve and obey God, and only in Him can we find joy and satisfaction. Therefore, God uses these means of both past and future to draw us to Himself in true, heartfelt repentance. This means that we should take the time to ask ourselves, “How has God worked for my good in the past?” and “How has God promised to work for my good in the future?” And when you see the ways that God has loved you and promises to love you in the future, let this draw you to Him in repentance and love.
