Why are we so concerned with the order of salvation? What difference does it make that Calling comes after Election and before Regeneration? Most of my non-believing friends won’t even know what the word “justification” means. Now that we are just over halfway through the Ordo Salutis, it is a good time to remember how far we have come and why we are going through this series. What Scripture says about how God saves us tells us a lot about who we are and who God is.

The basis of our salvation is Union with Christ. God elects his people, calls his people, and regenerates his people so that they can respond with faith and repentance. God has been moving every obstacle out of the way so that we could even become Christians. He then continues his work of saving sinners by justifying them. He declares that his elect are righteous. How can God declare a sinner to be righteous? Easy: He makes them righteous! The great news of the Gospel is that while we are still sinners, Christ died for us. Christ took on our sinful state so that we can take on his perfect state. Romans 3:28 says that, “one is justified by faith.” We know from the previous steps of the Ordo Salutis that this faith is not the basis of our righteousness. Faith is an instrument God uses to declare us righteous, but Christ is the source of righteousness. God has done everything necessary to give us what we desperately need and what he alone can offer. Without God, we are condemned in our own sin, but thanks to God, we are declared righteous. Now that God has taken care of our biggest needs we can inherit the blessings of the kingdom, live Christian lives, and fight the good fight of the faith. He has already declared us righteous, so now we are free to live that way.
