Westminster Shorter Catechism Question 20:

Did God leave all mankind to perish in the estate of sin and misery?

Answer:

God having, out of his mere good pleasure, from all eternity, elected some to everlasting life, did enter into a covenant of grace, to deliver them out of the estate of sin and misery, and to bring them into an estate of salvation by a Redeemer.

Of all the Christian doctrines, election probably takes the cake of most hated by the world. It’s even hated by some believers! At the same time, it is clearly taught throughout Scripture and is too important to be ignored or avoided. I think the Westminster Shorter Catechism format helps put this doctrine into perspective. The questions follow the history of mankind from the state of innocence in which he was created through the state of sin and misery into which he fell. It starts with the well known and happy phrase that man was created “to glorify God and enjoy Him forever” and by Question 19 arrives to our fallen condition saying that, “All mankind by their fall lost communion with God, are under his wrath and curse, and so made liable to all miseries in this life, to death itself, and to the pains of hell for ever.” Everyone deserves these terrible things because of their sin. It is from this low point that Question 20 pivots the trajectory by saying that God does not leave His people there. Everyone deserves death and hell, but God from his mere good pleasure elected some to be saved through Christ!

When we consider the doctrine of election to be unfair, we are correct. It is unfair. We deserve hell and it is not fair that God gives anyone heaven. But because of His great mercy He chooses some to inherit salvation. We get to see God’s full mercy on display because He chose to show it. We do not get to know why God chooses some and not others, but the Bible assures us that it is nothing inherent within the person and we can trust that God is good and does all things to the praise of His glory (Romans 8:28, Ephesians 1:11-12).
