Growing up, whenever I would go and stay at a friend’s house my dad would always say to me, “Remember who you are.” It was his way of telling me to behave. Basically, he was saying, “You’re an Overcast, so act like one whether you’re at home or not.” While I don’t think he realized it at the time, my dad was actually being very biblical in his efforts to see me behave. In his book Hole in Our Holiness, Kevin DeYoung says, “If I had to summarize New Testament ethics in one sentence, here’s how I would put it: be who you are.” If we are trusting in Christ for salvation, then we have also been adopted into God’s family as His children. The reason this matters is that it means that our obedience flows out of God’s love, not the other way around. God loves us enough to make us His children, and our obedience should flow out of the fact that we are part of a new family: the family of God.

So Uptown Church, remember who you are. You’re a child of God, so live like it. You are loved and accepted by your heavenly Father in ways that you can’t even imagine. So let us live out of this security and this love. Let us worship our heavenly Father for the love He has shown us. And let us come to Him as His children, seeking to please Him as we rest in His love.
