“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” -1 Timothy 3:16-17

This is one of the go-to texts when talking about Scripture. It answers questions like, “Where does the Bible come from?” “Why do Christians trust the bible?” and “What is the Bible used for?” But it also speaks of the consistency of the Bible. “All Scripture is breathed out by God.” The Bible is consistent from beginning to end. Genesis is no more or less inspired than Revelation. There are differences in human author, genre, date, audience, and application, but it was all breathed out by God and profitable for believers in every age.

This is a difficult concept to apply when coming to passages like Colossians 4:7-18. We have made it to the end of Paul’s letter to the church in Colossai and get his sign off. He lists a lot of people very dear to the Colossians who want to send their greetings. We have less familiarity with who these people were. The pastors at Uptown do not choose obscure passages of Scripture to preach because they want to show off their intellectual skill and creativity. Rather, because God has preserved all Scripture for His Church, it is the pastor’s duty and privilege to preach all of the word. This is a passage that is easy to gloss over. The names are hard to pronounce and you can see the start of 1 Thessalonians on the next page and just want to skip ahead. There are certainly parts of Scripture that are more challenging than others, but God is speaking to His Church through the Word and there is something to be gained from every verse.
